Corpus Metaphysics Against Robertson/CBT — A Reply to the Traditionalist Living Stoicism Thread

Occasion
This post responds to a discussion on the Traditionalist Living Stoicism Facebook group (original post), in which Hyrum Webb and Hardy debated whether Stoicism’s focus is metaphysical or primarily psychological, and whether Donald Robertson’s CBT-oriented Stoicism can be practiced without the metaphysics Robertson has been reported to treat as undecided or dispensable. Hardy’s question — is Stoicism devoid of metaphysics simply CBT? — is the question this document answers directly, using the corpus’s ratified findings on Robertson’s own argumentative record.
The Shared Ground
Robertson’s framework and the corpus agree on the value hierarchy: virtue is genuinely good, vice is genuinely evil, externals are genuinely indifferent. Robertson affirms this consistently and distinguishes Stoicism from Buddhism on exactly this ground — virtue as an end in itself, not a means to personal peace. The disagreement is not over what Stoicism values. It is over what has to be true about the world for that valuation to be more than a useful description of what produces wellbeing.
Where Robertson’s Framework Diverges — C1, Substance Dualism
The corpus holds that the rational faculty (prohairesis) is a distinct, non-physical substance — not reducible to bodily or neural process. This is what makes the internal/external boundary a fact about reality rather than a practical convenience, and what allows the rational faculty to stand apart from bodily and external conditions as the genuine locus of control.
Robertson’s framework requires the opposite. His governing thesis — Stoicism as precursor to and model for CBT — treats the inner life as a naturalistic psychological process: beliefs and judgments that are studied, measured, and modified by evidence-based technique. His explicit endorsement of compatibilist determinism places the agent’s inner life inside the same causal network as everything else. A distinct immaterial substance standing apart from natural causation has no place in that picture. The ratified audit’s finding on this point is Contrary, and notes that Robertson does not merely omit substance dualism — in discussion of this corpus he dismissed it as a Christian import with no place in authentic Stoicism, foreclosing the question genealogically rather than arguing it philosophically.
Where Robertson’s Framework Diverges — C2, Libertarian Free Will
The corpus holds that assent is genuinely originated by the agent — a real decision point at which alternative possibilities are metaphysically open, not merely epistemically uncertain. Without this, the claim that assent is “up to us” collapses into passive participation in a causal chain, and moral responsibility becomes misplaced.
Robertson explicitly endorses Stoic fatalism and frames Stoic determinism as compatibilist: actions are co-determined by internal and external causes, with the agent’s choices functioning as outputs within that causal network rather than as genuinely originated acts. The ratified audit finds this Contrary to C2 for the same reason it is Contrary to C1 — a compatibilist determinist framework has no room for an agent who is the true first cause of his own assent.
Why “Stoicism Minus Metaphysics” Is Not a Stable Position
The audit’s most significant secondary finding is that Robertson’s record is internally Inconsistent on C5 (Correspondence Theory of Truth): his moral and epistemic claims — including his own argument against Jordan Peterson, which invokes the Stoic standard of objective representation (phantasia kataleptike) — require a correspondence account of truth, while his therapeutic claims require a pragmatist-empiricist account validated by outcomes. Both are load-bearing in his work; neither can be dropped without losing something he needs.
This is the answer to Hardy’s question. It is not that Stoicism happens to come bundled with metaphysics as an optional attachment. The metaphysics — C1 and C2 specifically, standing on the foundation of C3 through C6 — is what makes “virtue is the only good” a claim about how reality actually is, rather than a clinically useful description of what tends to produce wellbeing. Remove it, and what remains is not lean, metaphysics-free Stoicism. It is CBT, honestly practiced under Stoic vocabulary — which is close to what Robertson’s own books argue, and which the corpus’s audit finds his record actually requires once its presuppositions are traced out.
