Step 0 — Protocol Activation
(a) Work, edition. The Reclaimed Ground, an original NCP-composed novel, English, composed this session. Approximately 15,280 words.
(b) Selection rule. Under NPA v0.3 Amendment 3, works below the approximately 30,000-word threshold require the complete-work selection rule rather than sampling. The entire text was taken.
(c) Disconfirming result. Two expectations stated in advance. First, that C2 would Carry with the thrall/origination tension resolved by a staged act, rather than reverting to the Split verdict returned by the Dracula NPA — a Split finding here would count against the design. Second, that C4’s declared displacement would satisfy the v0.4 requirement that the genuine article operate somewhere the displaced version cannot reach — failure to locate a specific such moment would count against it.
(d) Prior conclusion check. The Commitment Slate declared at composition Step 0 is held here as hypothesis, not assumed true by virtue of having been declared.

Step 1 — Layer Test
The work is entirely first-person inset material — journals and letters throughout, with no third-person frame. D / D-c / X registers govern the whole sample, consistent with the Dracula run.
Step 3 — Commitment Findings
C1 — Substance Dualism: Carries
No operative condition is required under v0.4, but the distinction is depicted consistently: the entity that walks after Rosalind Fenner’s bodily death is treated throughout as distinct from that body, and its release at the sluice is framed as the granting of rest to what the body no longer housed.
C2 — Libertarian Free Will: Carries — confirms the design
The thrall/override tension present throughout the middle chapters (Rosalind’s compelled sleepwalking, the fen-wife’s command over her victims) is resolved specifically by Clara Vane’s freely originated, unbargained speech at the sluice. This is staged in the D register — a performed act of speech within the scene — rather than resting on any narrator’s retrospective claim to her own courage (D-c), which satisfies the NARRATOR SELF-CERTIFICATION guard directly.
C3 — Ethical Intuitionism: Carries
Clara’s identification of which mourner the rite requires arrives by sudden, unargued recollection of a three-year-old remark, not by inference from the assembled dossier. Corvin’s own letter explicitly marks this as apprehension the corroborated record could not itself have produced.
C4 — Foundationalism: Structurally Carries / Content Displaced, Type PROCEDURAL
The v0.4 displacement declaration is satisfied. The evidentiary dossier Clara assembles — letters, diaries, dated cross-checks — is procedural throughout, terminating in corroboration rather than direct apprehension. The required further condition, that the genuine article operate somewhere the displaced version cannot reach, is explicitly located: the schoolroom remark exists in no record the dossier could ever have contained, and Corvin’s closing letter names this location directly rather than leaving it implicit.
C5 — Correspondence Theory: Carries
Edmund Thorne’s sanity is vindicated by independent corroboration — Corvin’s researches, the marks on Rosalind’s throat, Tunnicliffe’s parallel case — rather than by any comfort taken in the belief itself.
C6 — Moral Realism: Carries, resolved
The rite’s requirement is treated as an objective fact about what is owed, not a sentiment to be managed. The resolution is confirmed by an independent witness’s plain statement that the account is closed (Dr. Wrey, closing diary entry), rather than resting solely on the principals’ own relief.
NCP-G4 (reward distinguished from consequence): Passes
Clara receives nothing material for her act. The resolution is explicit that nothing was owed to her either at the sluice or afterward; her only stated reward is the truth having been told.
Detachable Wrong: Correctly constructed
All five required absences are present in Mr. Garrow’s omission: no nameable injury at the time, no traceable consequence for eleven years, no witness but himself, no external reproach (his regret in the letter is self-generated, not solicited or delivered by an injured party), and no awareness of wrongdoing — he states plainly that he believed his professional judgment correct at the time and does not retroactively claim otherwise.
Self-Audit Flags
PREDICTION CONTAMINATION — unmitigated. The Commitment Slate was declared before drafting by the same party conducting this audit. No independently composed or independently audited control exists for this work, unlike the mitigation available for Ryhope via Dave Kelly’s Professor’s House run. This finding should be read with that qualification attached.
THESIS SPEECH risk — examined and cleared. Professor Corvin’s closing letter reflects at some length on the limits of corroborated evidence against direct witness — language close to the corpus’s own methodological concerns. On examination it remains in period-appropriate scholarly diction and names no corpus commitment or C-number directly; it is judged to stay inside Section 1’s prohibition rather than breach it, but the closeness of the case is recorded rather than silently passed.
Step 4 — Work Profile
Both disconfirming-result tests stated at Step 0 are satisfied: C2 returned a resolved Carries rather than a Split, and C4’s declared displacement located a specific, named instance of the genuine article operating beyond the displaced version’s reach. This is the first corpus work composed with the v0.4 displacement-declaration requirement in view from its own Step 0, and it satisfies that requirement without the requirement having to be retrofitted after the fact, as was necessary for Wrelton, Ryhope, and Ansty under the earlier specification.

On C2: Origination as the Explicit Mechanism of Victory
The Dracula NPA found C2 Split: real origination staged (Jonathan Harker’s second descent of the castle wall, Seward’s refusal of chloral) sitting alongside real override (Lucy’s compelled sleepwalking, Mina’s hypnotic thrall) with no textual resolution preferring one pole to the other. The source novel does not need to resolve this tension; its interest lies elsewhere, in the accumulation of dread rather than in a settled verdict on the will.
A companion work built to Carry C2 as load-bearing has a narrower target: the antagonist’s power must be characteristically an override of will, and the victory over that antagonist must be achieved by an act that is recognizably the opposite — origination exercised at the one moment it is hardest to exercise it. This constrains the climax considerably. It cannot be won by force (iron, holy water, the destruction of the body), because force does not answer override with origination; it merely substitutes one external power for another. It must be won by an act nobody compels the actor to perform, offered without the expectation of return, and staged as an act — spoken aloud, in the scene — rather than reported as a state of mind achieved off-page.
The risk in this design is that the resolution will feel imposed rather than earned: a character simply announces the freely-willed truth the plot requires, and the announcement does the work a scene should have done. The mitigation attempted here was to make the content of Clara’s truth itself uncertain until very late — she does not know, for most of the novel, which mourner the rite requires, and her eventual certainty arrives by a route (an old, unrecorded memory) that could not have been produced on demand. The freely originated act is thus also an act whose content could not have been manufactured to order, which is offered as the strongest available evidence that the origination is real rather than staged for the reader’s benefit alone.
On C4: Locating the Genuine Article Within a Procedural Displacement
NCP v0.4’s displacement declaration requires more than permission to displace C4 in a grounding-plot; it requires that the composer identify, before drafting, where the genuine article will operate beyond the displaced version’s reach. This is a harder requirement than it first appears, because a grounding-plot’s entire momentum runs toward more evidence, better corroboration, one more cross-checked date — the procedural machine, once started, wants to keep running, and a composer can easily forget to build in the place where it must stop short.
The device used here was to give the dossier itself a completeness that becomes conspicuous: by the time Clara sits down with the fully assembled record, every date is checked, every account cross-referenced, and the record is, by any reasonable standard, as complete as such a record could be made. The genuine article’s operation is then dramatized not as a gap in the evidence-gathering (which would read as a failure of diligence) but as a gap in evidence-gathering’s very nature — a category of fact that no amount of further checking could have surfaced, because it was never the kind of fact that gets written down at all. Corvin’s closing letter states this distinction directly, which was a deliberate choice to name the finding rather than leave it merely implicit, on the view that a v0.4 displacement declaration this early in the specification’s life is better served by an explicit demonstration than by a subtle one a reader might miss.
Whether that choice sits too close to THESIS SPEECH is flagged above and left for further judgment rather than resolved unilaterally here.
