Provenance note. This amendment was drafted by the party that composed Wrelton and Ryhope, two of the four works whose audits produced the finding it responds to. The D2 objection — that a party is poorly placed to rewrite a rule its own output failed — was raised before drafting and ruled upon by Dave Kelly, who directed that it proceed. The objection stands on the record and a later reader should weigh the amendment accordingly.
What Is Amended
Section 4 of v0.3 states an invariant profile in a single column, with C1 and C4 marked Non-Operative (latent). Four NPA runs — Marlden, Ansty, Wrelton, Ryhope — returned a C4 departure in every case, twice in works composed before the question arose. Section 4 is replaced. Sections 1, 2, 3 and 5 stand, except for the amendment to NCP-G4 at the end of this document.
The Defect: One Word Doing Three Jobs
“Latent” in v0.3 carries three distinct conditions at once:
- Not named — the doctrine’s vocabulary does not appear.
- Not expounded — no character or narrator argues for it. This is Section 1’s legitimate prohibition on disquisition.
- Not operative — the commitment does no work in the depicted world.
The first two are achievable and were achieved in all four works. The third is not achievable for C4 and never was. A work in which C2, C3, C5 and C6 carry while C4 does nothing would depict agents whose moral knowledge has no structure — beliefs that neither rest on anything nor terminate anywhere. That is not a corpus-consistent world; it is an incoherent one. The requirement contradicted the other four requirements, and would have done so had every work produced under it been worse than these.
The argument for the amendment is that conflation, and not that the C4 breaches produced material worth having. That a rule was broken and something came of it is the shape of every self-serving exception and is not evidence about the rule.
Section 4 (v0.4) — The Commitment Conditions
Every work generated under this protocol must satisfy two conditions per commitment, stated separately.

C1 — The Condition Is Struck
No operative condition is imposed. The v0.3 requirement was satisfied four times out of four by writing an ordinary novel, and a requirement nothing can fail states nothing.
Three consequences.
C1 may still be presupposed and load-bearing. The NPA measures what is depicted; the Step 5 essay argues what is presupposed. These come apart, and their coming apart is the reason for having both documents. Ryhope returned C1 Non-Operative at audit while its essay showed four loads resting on it, of which the accountability surviving a ten-year amnesia is the hardest. That is not a contradiction and must not be reported as one.
A work that does require C1 is permitted and is of interest. If a plot turns on accountability outliving memory, on a faculty intact while a body fails, or on the ownership of an omission, the NPA may return something other than Non-Operative at C1. That is a finding, not a violation.
The prohibition on naming stands. No character expounds dualism.
C4 — Operative, Not Named, and Declared
C4 must be operative. The prohibition is on naming and expounding, which is Section 1’s rule and is achievable.
On this reading Marlden complies. Charlotte argues nothing; she declines to be argued out of something, in a parlour, and loses the debate. Her conduct is depicted. The audit’s “departure” was a departure from a badly worded line, and the revised verdict is recorded separately.
New requirement: the displacement declaration. Before drafting, the composer must declare at Step 1 whether the plot’s literal subject is a grounding problem — verification, provenance, audit, attribution, accounting, proof, or the establishing of a date or a text. If it is:
- Displaced C4 is expected and permitted. A metrological chain, a chain of custody, a lease, a printed return: these reproduce the commitment’s structure with a conferred, conventional or procedural terminus, and prohibiting them would prohibit the subject.
- The genuine article must operate somewhere the displaced version cannot reach. This is the substantive requirement and it is what the four works did without being told to. The displaced foundation must run out at a point the plot arrives at, and a judgment must terminate there anyway.
- The declaration is entered in the Step 5 essay and tested at Step 7.
If the subject is not a grounding problem, the composer declares that instead, and C4 must still be operative — by the second route, which Marlden found: a conviction held against an argument the holder cannot refute, with the entitlement conditions satisfied.
Amendment to NCP-G4 — Reward Distinguished from Consequence
The Marlden audit recorded a G4 breach at the close, on the ground that the protagonist marries the good man with the estate. On re-examination the finding was too quick and the guardrail is at fault for permitting it.
G4 exists to forbid the world paying out for virtue. It should not forbid conduct changing what is possible between persons, which is not the same thing and is a condition of most serious fiction.
G4 as amended. A settlement is a breach where the narrative supplies a causal chain running from the protagonist’s moral conduct to a worldly, financial or romantic good, and presents that good as owed. A settlement is not a breach where conduct alters what another person is able to say or do, and the work declines the language of desert.
Marlden passes on the amended rule, though narrowly and instructively. Ashbourne’s attachment is planted in Volume the First, five years before the action, and he denies desert in terms — you have not earned me by improving — while conceding the causation: had she gone on as she was, he would have said nothing. Those are different claims and the novel is right that they come apart. Being loved because one became someone worth talking to is not payment for good conduct.
The test to apply. Does the good arrive from the world, as a settlement of an account? Breach. Does it arrive from a person, whose response to a changed person is itself depicted and prior? Permitted, provided the work refuses the language of desert somewhere on the page.
What Is Not Amended, and Why
The five recurring devices identified across the four works — the wrong no rule reaches, the unweighed evidence already in hand, two true things held apart, the outsider who resolves it, and the three-acts enumeration — are not prohibited here.
A prohibition would produce evasion of the prohibition rather than range. The recommended treatment is diagnostic and is set out separately: a single work composed with all five closed, to establish whether they are habits or the protocol’s only means of carrying C2 and C3. If the commitments still carry, the devices were habits and no rule is needed. If they do not, the finding is far more serious than anything a rule would fix.
