I. Purpose and Governing Question
The Corpus Substitution Instrument performs the replacement operation on a work whose doctrine has been found to diverge from the corpus. Its governing question is:
When a work’s doctrine diverges from the corpus, what does the corpus put in its place, and what remains of the work once that is done?
The instrument does not improve the work. It does not produce a corrected version of the source doctrine for the source’s own purposes. It states what the corpus holds at each point where the source holds something else, and it reports what survives.
II. Position Among the Instruments
The SCE evaluates an idea against the full corpus and issues a verdict. The CPA audits a named figure’s explicit argumentative record. The CIA and SIA audit an ideology’s presuppositions. The CDA operates below the argumentative layer on displaced commitments in cultural practice. None of these replaces anything.
The CSI runs downstream of a divergence finding and performs the replacement. It presupposes that finding; it does not produce it. A CSI run without a prior divergence finding is a malfunction, not a shortcut.
III. The Derivation Requirement
Every replacement issued by this instrument is read off one chain, and the chain is stated at the head of every run before any replacement appears.
The universe is rationally ordered and governed by divine reason (Prop 1), and all outcomes in the external world are determined by Providence (Prop 2). A person’s true identity is constituted by the rational faculty alone (Props 3–4); everything other than that faculty, the body included, is external to the self (Prop 5). Impressions arrive from the external world and their arrival is not in our control (Props 6, 8). The faculty has the power to assent or to withhold assent (Prop 10), and that act is the only thing in our control (Prop 11). Only virtue is genuinely good and only vice genuinely evil (Prop 17); all externals are neither (Prop 18); the belief that any external is good or evil is factually false (Prop 20).
A replacement that cannot be traced to this chain by cited propositions is not a replacement. It is composition, and it is struck from the run.
IV. Named Failure Modes
Failure Mode 1 — Substitution Without Divergence. The instrument replaces a source proposition the corpus does not in fact contradict. The Step 2 verdict must precede the Step 3 replacement in every case. A proposition the corpus permits is retained, and retention is a finding.
Failure Mode 2 — Free-Floating Replacement. A replacement is stated without propositional citation, or with a citation that does not bear the weight assigned to it. Citation is not ornament here; it is the whole warrant for the substitution.
Failure Mode 3 — Vocabulary Swap. The source doctrine is restated in corpus terms with its structure left intact. The output reads as corpus-compliant while the load-bearing architecture of the source survives untouched. This is the D2 failure in its substitution form: it is invisible from inside the run, and ratification is the only check on it.
Failure Mode 4 — Residue Inflation. Source propositions are retained to keep the work standing. The instrument has no interest in the survival of the source. If one proposition of eight survives, the residue is one of eight.
Failure Mode 5 — Category Preservation. The content of a source category is replaced while the category itself is kept — the source’s central term retained with corpus material poured into it. Where the corpus has no counterpart category, the correct output is that it has none.
Failure Mode 6 — Corpus Extension. A corpus position is invented to fill a slot the source has and the corpus lacks. The absence is declared, with the resources examined stated.
V. Operational Protocol
Execute in strict sequence. The self-audit at each step transition is mandatory and appears explicitly in output. It is not an internal check.
Step 0 — Activation. Confirm four conditions. The source text has been read, or a propositional restatement has been ratified in its place with its provenance declared. A divergence finding exists and is identified by instrument and run. The corpus is in view and will be cited by name and proposition. No conclusion is held in advance of the analysis. HALT on any failure, and state which condition failed.
Step 1 — Propositional Restatement. State the source doctrine in numbered propositions. Identify which are load-bearing for the doctrine’s core claims, not for its most favourable interpretation.
Step 2 — Divergence Location. Issue one verdict per proposition: Struck, Retained with correction, Retained, or Outside domain. Grounds stated for each. Outside domain requires a positive showing that the corpus’s domain is genuinely absent, and is accompanied by a declared gap.
Step 3 — Derivation. For each proposition struck or corrected, state the corpus counterpart with propositions cited. Where the corpus holds no counterpart, declare the absence rather than compose one.
Step 4 — Residue. State what survives and in what corrected form. Apply the test: if the output could be read as an improved version of the source, the run has failed and returns to Step 3.
Step 5 — Structural Finding. State whether the source’s central category has a corpus counterpart at all, and why. This is the finding the agent is most likely to need, because it settles whether the source names something real under a wrong description or names nothing the corpus recognises.
VI. Mandatory Instrument Limitation
The instrument cannot verify that its replacements are genuine derivations rather than pattern-completion rationalised in corpus vocabulary. Dave Kelly’s ratification is architecturally necessary and is the only external check available to it.
The instrument does not determine whether the corpus is correct. The corpus governs it without qualification.
The instrument issues no action guidance. Where action is in question, the SDF is the appropriate instrument.
VII. Reference Run
The output form is fixed by The Corpus Substitution — Hill’s Drift Doctrine Replaced by Its Corpus Counterparts v1.0, which was produced before this instrument was drafted and conforms to it: eight propositions restated, six struck, one struck as inverted, one retained with correction, and a structural finding that the source’s central category has no corpus counterpart. Its Step 0 input is the ratified propositional restatement recorded in SCE Run — Hill’s Outwitting the Devil: Step 0 Halt and Input Restatement v1.0, with its provenance declared there as recall rather than text.
