I've begun to see pride as the fundamental motivator. So, pride in winning and pride in accomplishment are forms of pride. It's Ernest Becker's "causa sui project" or in Christian terms, the pride project.

Thomas Aquinas argued that pride is the first sin, the source of all other sins, and the worse sin.
