Handoff Brief: The Beatles Project v0.4
Handoff Brief: The Beatles Project v0.4
Prepared from the Sterling corpus project for the operator, Dave Kelly. v0.2 ratified by the operator, 15 October 2026; v0.3 amended on his instruction, 16 October 2026; v0.4 ratified by the operator, 17 October 2026.
1. What the project is
This project resolves every song the Beatles wrote and published against the chain, one track at a time, each as a corpus document. The documents belong to the one corpus (R-2026-10-07-02). They are published on Stoic News and filed to this project.
2. The operator
Dave Kelly is the operator. Nothing is filed, rendered or published without his ratification. A document that arrives from outside this project is treated as an unratified draft, whatever its header says.
Runs go one track at a time, as the operator brings them. No agent runs the tracks.
3. Standing rulings
- R-2026-10-15-01 (scope), narrowed 17 Oct 2026: The instruments run on every track of the Beatles’ discography that the Beatles themselves wrote. Covers are excluded. Every such track receives a run and a verdict; “No technical claim” is a verdict, not an exclusion. It amends the 14 Sep 2026 instrument-scope ruling for this discography only.
- Fifth verdict (ruled 15 Oct 2026, not yet given a Register number): “Contradicts the chain on the text” stands on the scale for every run from “Run for Your Life” on. It is for a claim the song asserts without any added reading. “Help!” and “In My Life” were run on the four-verdict scale and stand as ratified.
- R-2026-10-08-07 (attribution): Sterling’s name stands on the premises and theorems only. The reading of each song is Dave Kelly’s, and each document says so.
- R-2026-10-08-13 (form): Essays are composed as traceable propositions. Premises are stated first with their sources, each derived claim names its support, definitions come before what rests on them, and observations are marked.
4. The method
Each run has these sections, in this order:
- 1. Title: Resolving “[Song]”: [N] Claims and the Chain v0.1
- 2. Attribution line, directly under the title: Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Claude (Anthropic). 2026.
- 3. Lead question, naming the song, its first release date, and R-2026-10-15-01.
- 4. The Beginning, stated in full, then this line: “This is the chain compressed, not a deduction. Its lines in Core Stoicism are Th1, Th2, 2*, Th3–5, Th6, Th10 and 14.”
- 5. Premises, numbered P1, P2 and so on. Each is cited to its Core Stoicism line, with “Th” for a basic line and a plain number for a derived line, or to Excerpt 7, the C-pages or the Ruling Register.
- 6. Definitions.
- 7. The claims, paraphrased and located by their place in the song.
- 8. The verdict scale.
- 9. Derivations, with one verdict per branch.
- 10. The Finding.
- 11. The Recovery Audit, for the listener, not the songwriter.
- 12. An Observation, marked, if there is one.
- 13. What This Document Does Not Claim.
- 14. Version Note.
The Beginning, word for word: Everyone wants happiness. Incomplete happiness is not worth accepting if complete happiness is available. Complete happiness must therefore lie wholly within our control. Only assent does. So happiness is correct assent, and assent is correct when it matches the truth about value: only virtue is good.
The verdict scale:
- No technical claim
- Compatible
- Contradicts the chain only on the stated reading
- Contradicts the chain on the text
- Indeterminate on the text
Rules for every run:
- The lyric is never quoted. Each claim is paraphrased. A single word may be quoted where the analysis turns on it.
- Nothing is said about the songwriters’ biography, state of mind or intent.
- Where a passage allows two readings, each reading is run separately. No contradiction is found unless the claim actually contradicts a premise.
- The Recovery Audit runs after assent, as in the two-mode model. It never describes intercepting an impression in real time.
- Revising the assent is an act of will. Any act in the world belongs to a later step.
- Factual judgments, such as that someone is gone or did not reciprocate, are not in question. Only judgments that call an external good or evil are.
- Grief is a false value judgment (R-2026-09-26-01). Only a start or a flinch is named as a reaction that comes before judgment (R-2026-10-01-03).
5. Rendering
Rendering follows HTML Rendering Standard Template 3, the single home for markup rules. Open it before any render.
6. Model runs
- Resolving “Help!”: Four Claims and the Chain v0.2. Ratified, filed and blogged: https://stoicnews.blogspot.com/2026/10/deconstructing-help-evidentiary.html
- The URL carries the title of an earlier, incorrect version. v0.2 was published over it at the same address so the link already shared on Facebook would keep working. The document’s title is “Resolving ‘Help!’: Four Claims and the Chain v0.2.”
- Resolving “In My Life”: Four Claims and the Chain v0.1. Ratified, filed and blogged: https://stoicnews.blogspot.com/2026/10/resolving-in-my-life-four-claims-and.html
- Resolving “Run for Your Life”: Five Claims and the Chain v0.1. Ratified and rendered. It introduced the fifth verdict. Filing and blogging not yet confirmed.
7. Open items
- Drafted, not ratified: “Love Me Do” v0.1 (dated to the single, 5 Oct 1962, not 1963), “Please Please Me” v0.1, and “I Saw Her Standing There” v0.1.
- Not ruled: the use of the CPA charity rule (ratified 20 Sep 2026) in song runs. It was first used in “Please Please Me” to join Claims A and B.
- Not ruled: the run order. The operator chooses one:
- Strict release order: UK first-release order, singles and EPs included, track by track. The drafted runs so far follow this order.
- Albums first: the thirteen UK albums in order, then Past Masters, then “Free as a Bird,” “Real Love” and “Now and Then.” Note that the canonical thirteen include the US Magical Mystery Tour LP, which was a double EP in the UK.
- Not ruled: what counts as published. This covers live and archival releases (Live at the BBC, Anthology), alternate mixes, and foreign-language versions.
- Not entered: the fifth verdict needs a Ruling Register number.
- Not rechecked: Excerpt 7 premises have not been rechecked against the source text in any run so far.

Version Note
v0.1 was drafted in the corpus project on 15 October 2026. v0.2, revised the same day, limits the fifth verdict to runs from “Run for Your Life” on, records that R-2026-10-15-01 amends the 14 Sep scope ruling for this discography only, adds the one-track-at-a-time rule, explains the “Help!” URL, splits the run-order proposal into two options, and adds the open question of what counts as published. The new project cannot read this project’s Ruling Register, so the rulings it needs are stated in full above. Ratified by the operator, 15 October 2026.
v0.3, 16 October 2026, supersedes v0.2. One change, made on the operator’s instruction: Section 5’s markup rules are struck and replaced by a pointer to Template 3, under his ruling of 16 October 2026 that Template 3 is the single home for markup rules. Nothing else is changed.
v0.4, 17 October 2026, supersedes v0.3. Under the operator’s ruling of 17 October 2026, the scope is narrowed to songs the Beatles wrote, and covers are excluded. §1 and the R-2026-10-15-01 entry in §3 are amended. Nothing else is changed. Ratified by the operator, 17 October 2026.
