CPA Run — James Daltrey — Version 1.1

CPA Run — James Daltrey — Version 1.1

Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Claude (Anthropic). 2026.

Classical Presupposition Audit (CPA) v1.2. Instrument architecture: Dave Kelly. Corpus opened for this run: the CPA v1.2 instrument document and Core Stoicism.

What Is the Classical Presupposition Audit?

The Classical Presupposition Audit identifies the presuppositions a named public figure must hold in order to argue as he does, and audits them against the six commitments: substance dualism, libertarian free will, ethical intuitionism, foundationalism, correspondence theory of truth, and moral realism. Its subject is the figure’s own argumentative record. It issues no findings about his inner life, his sincerity, or the correctness of his scholarship.

Subject and Locus

James Daltrey is the founder of Living Stoicism. The declared locus is three texts:

L2 and L3 are admitted as Daltrey’s reported words and are tagged [R] wherever they bear on a finding.

Step 0 — Protocol Activation

The figure is identified and the locus declared. All three texts were opened in full. The governing propositions are taken from CPA v1.2 §IV. Nine Excerpts, Free Will and Causation, and the other documents on the CPA corpus list were not opened and are not relied on.

Self-Audit — Step 0:

  • Corpus in view — partly; the exception is recorded and ruled under Rulings on This Run.
  • Sources restricted to his record — yes; L2 and L3 admitted as reported speech and tagged.
  • Prior conclusion — an expectation was stated in chat before the run that C2 would be Contrary and the finding Full Dissolution. It was tested, not assumed; the strongest counter-consideration is worked at C2.

Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 1.

Step 1 — Presupposition Profile

Stage A — Argumentative Record Summary.

P1 — Stoic ethics rests on the ordered cosmos. (L1) Living in harmony with Nature requires a Nature that is real, knowable and ordered; he finds no other foundation for Stoic ethics, and offers the Epicureans as the case of a different physics yielding a different ethics. The move: his answer to Pigliucci.

P2 — Corporeal monism. (L1; L2 [R]) Only bodies exist and act; one substance; Cosmos, God and Nature are the same; the logos is the cosmos’s internal law and its intelligibility; human beings are matter particularly arranged. The move: the whole of L1’s case that the Stoic God fits science.

P3 — Universal corporeal causation, without abstract laws. L1, in his own voice: the cosmos is strictly causal, God is bound by cause and effect, and physicalist determinism keeps Stoicism within science — glossed as excluding miracles. L2 [R]: determinism in the sense of abstract laws is denied; everything can in principle be explained by what went before; the future is generated from the past, not contained in it. The move: his rebuttal both of the miracle charge (L1) and of the determinist label (L2).

P4 — The human being is an active power within the whole, not set apart from it. (L2 [R]; L1) We are, in L2’s words, “an active energetic dynamic power within the dynamic power of the whole,” and he answers yes both to being moved by the unified force and to its being moved by us. L1, after Epictetus: act like the foot or the hand, by reference to the whole.

P5 — Providence is order and regularity, general not special. (L1; L2 [R]) What is good for the whole is good for us; sickness and calamity are the normal working of the whole.

P6 — Virtue is knowledge of the use of indifferents. (L3 [R]) Virtue is a technē; knowledge is the only good and ignorance the only vice; virtue is not related to intentions; the external world, not the agent’s own head, tells him whether he is right.

Stage B — Domain Mapping. Two domains: physics (P2–P5) and ethics (P1, P6), which P1 ties together. L1 affirms “determinism” and L2 denies it; joined, they form one coherent reading — universal corporeal causation, no miracles, no abstract laws — and charity selects it (ratified 20 September 2026). No Inconsistent finding is available. The expository exception was considered and not invoked: he argues throughout L1 against Pigliucci, and throughout L2 and L3.

Self-Audit — Step 1:

  • Drawn from his record — yes.
  • Load-bearing test — yes; the Rovelli and Grinspoon parallels were excluded as illustration.
  • Charity — applied at P3.
  • Domains mapped — yes.
  • Expository exception — considered, not met.

Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2 — Commitment Audit

C1 — Substance Dualism: Contrary. Governing proposition, Nine Excerpts §4: “I am my soul/prohairesis/inner self. Everything else, including my body, is an external.” P2 and P4 deny it directly: the human being is matter arranged, part of the one substance, and cannot be separated from the force of the whole. Load-bearing: P2 is the foundation of L1’s whole argument.

C2 — Libertarian Free Will: Contrary. Governing proposition, Nine Excerpts §7: choosing whether to assent is the only thing in our control; Core Stoicism Th 6 to the same effect. The test: is the agent the first cause of his assents, or an output of what precedes him?

Strongest counter-consideration. L2 [R] rejects determinism, holds the future open, and makes the agent an active power, not a passive one. On this ground the earlier runs returned Partially Aligned.

Why it does not hold. The open future concerns what is not yet. The C2 question concerns the present assent. On P3 the present assent is explicable in principle by what went before — nothing happens “just because” (L2 [R]) — in a strictly causal cosmos (L1, his own voice), and the agent’s “active power” is itself a portion of the one force of the whole (P4). An assent explicable from prior corporeal states is not originated by the agent. Joining L1 and L2 selects the coherent reading, not the milder verdict. Load-bearing: P3 carries his answer to both the miracle charge and the determinist label. Sterling’s nota bene to Th 21 names the consequence of strict determinism about internal states: vice is “somehow correct” and not in our control in any important sense.

C3 — Ethical Intuitionism: Contrary. Governing proposition, Core Stoicism Th 10. P1 derives the ethical content from the cosmic order and makes it depend on the physics — a different physics, a different ethics. P6 [R] puts the criterion of right and wrong in the external world, expressly not within the agent. Neither leaves room for moral truths apprehended non-inferentially. Load-bearing: P1 is his thesis. The earlier runs’ line “not grounded in logically deduced axioms” is not in this locus, and the finding does not rest on it.

C4 — Foundationalism: Partially Aligned. Correspondence: there is a fixed dependency — the ordered cosmos grounds the ethics — and he will not revise it under Pigliucci’s pressure. Residual: the foundation is discovered by systematic observation and experiment (L1’s four tests, taken from the history of science), not self-evident, and he leaves open whether another physics could reach the same ethics.

C5 — Correspondence Theory of Truth: Aligned. L1’s first test is an objective reality shared by all rational observers. L3 [R]: intentions must track the world, and a criterion of truth that exists only in one’s head cannot tell right from wrong. No pragmatic or perspectival treatment of truth appears anywhere in the locus.

C6 — Moral Realism: Partially Aligned. Governing proposition, Nine Excerpts §3: “Only virtue is good and only vice is evil.” Correspondence: P6 [R] holds knowledge the only good and ignorance the only vice, objectively, and externals neutral. Residual: objectivity is fixed by what the cosmos is (P1); on his own account the moral facts stand or fall with the physics. L1’s “good for us,” said of nature’s provisions, is read in the practical sense he marks and is not counted against him.

Self-Audit — Step 2:

  • All presuppositions audited — yes.
  • Non-Operative used — no.
  • Balance sought — no; the pattern is three Contrary, two Partially Aligned, one Aligned.
  • The C2 Contrary reverses the earlier runs’ finding; the reversal follows from L1, which they did not have, and the counter-consideration is shown.
  • Same findings for a sympathetic figure — yes.
  • Inconsistent available — no; the L1/L2 tension is joined under charity.

Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 — Dissolution Finding

C1: Contrary. C2: Contrary.

Finding: Full Dissolution.

P2 and P4 make the agent a part of the one corporeal whole, closing C1. P3 makes his present acts explicable from what went before, closing C2. Together they leave no faculty standing apart from the whole and originating its own assents.

This is a finding about what the framework requires of those who adopt it, not about Daltrey’s inner life, and it is not a political verdict.

Self-Audit — Step 3:

  • Follows mechanically from Step 2 — yes.
  • Stated about the framework, not the man — yes.
  • Philosophical, not political — yes.
  • Inconsistent finding on C1 or C2 — none.

Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 4.

Step 4 — Summary Finding

Part A — Commitment Pattern.

  • C1 — Substance Dualism: Contrary
  • C2 — Libertarian Free Will: Contrary
  • C3 — Ethical Intuitionism: Contrary
  • C4 — Foundationalism: Partially Aligned
  • C5 — Correspondence Theory of Truth: Aligned
  • C6 — Moral Realism: Partially Aligned

Overall pattern: 1 Aligned, 2 Partially Aligned, 3 Contrary, 0 Inconsistent, 0 Non-Operative. Deepest divergence: C2 — his rejection of the word “determinism” is real, but his own account of causation leaves the present assent explicable from the past. Strongest alignment: C5.

Part B — Dissolution Finding. Full Dissolution, on the grounds at Step 3.

Part C — Agent-Level Implication. An agent who adopts this framework takes up the following: he is matter particularly arranged, a part of the one living cosmos; what he does now can in principle be explained by what went before; his virtue is knowledge of how to use externals, and the world, not his own apprehension, tells him whether he is right; his ethics stands on the physics, and if the physics fell, the ethics would have no foundation left; and he accepts what happens as the working of the whole.

He is pointed toward knowledge, correct use and acceptance, and away from intentions. He receives no faculty set apart from the whole and no account of his assent as his own doing. The framework’s own concession — that the ethics stands only so long as the physics does — is the condition the chain was built to avoid.

Corpus Boundary Declaration. The CPA issues no findings on whether Daltrey’s reading of Stoic physics is historically accurate, whether his account of causation without laws is sound, or whether the Stoic cosmos fits modern science. Those questions are outside the instrument’s reach.

Self-Audit — Step 4:

  • Follows from Steps 1 to 3 — yes.
  • No political verdict — yes.
  • Addressed to the agent — yes.
  • Boundary declared — yes.
  • Self-contained — yes.

Self-Audit Complete. CPA run complete.

Rulings on This Run

  • This run supersedes the Classical Presupposition Audit on James Daltrey posted to Stoic News in April 2026, and the session-history reconstruction of it made in June 2026, which was never ratified. Their C2 and dissolution findings do not carry over.
  • L2 and L3 are admitted as Daltrey’s reported words on Dave Kelly’s instruction (15 October 2026). Both are bylined Keith P. Myers.
  • The Step 0 exception stands: only CPA v1.2 and Core Stoicism were opened.
  • At C2, the open future (L2) is held to bear on what is not yet, not on the present assent.
  • Consequential: “The Traditionalist Case and the CPA Record” v0.1 states at A7 that Daltrey “rejects determinism outright,” with C2 Partially Aligned, and D4 relies on it. Amendment indicated, not made.

Version Note

v1.1 replaces v1.0 at the same post address. It names the April 2026 post as superseded, which v1.0 omitted. No finding changes.
