Core Stoicism as the Ruling Principle of Systems — A Design v0.1
Core Stoicism as the Ruling Principle of Systems — A Design v0.1

The Beginning
Everyone wants happiness. Incomplete happiness is not worth accepting if complete happiness is available. Complete happiness must therefore lie wholly within our control. Only assent lies wholly within our control. Happiness is therefore correct assent, correct when it matches the truth about value. The truth about value is that only virtue is good and only vice is evil. Everything else is indifferent.
Key
- C1–C6: the six commitments. C1 Substance Dualism, C2 Libertarian Free Will, C3 Ethical Intuitionism, C4 Foundationalism, C5 Correspondence Theory, C6 Moral Realism.
- Th plus a number: a theorem of Core Stoicism.
- SLE plus a number: a numbered proposition of the Sterling Logic Engine.
Definitions
- Th10: the only thing actually good is virtue, the only thing actually evil is vice.
- Th25: some things are appropriate objects at which to aim, although they are not genuinely good.
- Th26: such objects include life, health, pleasure, knowledge, justice and truth-telling.
- Preferred indifferent: an appropriate object of aim (Th25, Th26) that is not good.
- Operator: the person who applies the Canon and signs off.
- Canon: the corpus.
- Role: a position that carries duties (SLE 65–66).
- System: a generator, rules, a checker, a memory and an operator, as set out in The Operator and the Canon.
Propositions
- Only persons assent (the chain, C1, C2). So only a person holds the chain. An institution or a machine holds nothing.
- A system is governed by Core Stoicism only so far as its operators hold it, each under his role.
- A role’s duties come first, then the aims (SLE 65–72, Th25–26). An institution’s objectives, such as profit or prestige, enter as preferred indifferents aimed at with reservation. They are never goods.
- A machine supplies ability and no judgment. It prepares, and nothing counts until the operator signs off.
- Each application is built for one audience by The Application Builder’s Kit. It then passes The Subordination Test, a DTI trace record, and operator ratification.
- Logic can be checked by code. Turning a situation into form is judgment, so each translation is ratified (The Operator and the Canon, “How Much Is Built”).
- It spreads by teaching and never by compulsion. Th10 first, then practice, then the commitments recognized afterward (The Commitments in Practice).
- The Canon is subordinate to judgment. It is true only as it matches what is, so it stays open to criticism.
What This Design Leaves Out
Not taken from ChatGPT: institutional mandates, declarations and sanctions, because Core Stoicism has no institutional will to bind.
