A CIA of Leviathan? — A Note on Instrument Fit v0.1

The question is whether a Classical Ideological Audit of Leviathan would be possible. Not of Leviathan as such. Of Hobbism, yes, with Leviathan as the source for one variant.

Why the Book Does Not Fit

The Declaration Form of the CIA v3.0 sets the instrument’s target constraint: a doctrinal system, agent none, two or more declared variants, and the core taken as the intersection across them.

Leviathan is one author’s text. It has a bearer and it is a single variant. With one variant the intersection is simply the whole book, and Stage Two has no input.

That input belongs to the Classical Presupposition Audit, and the CPA run on Hobbes has already taken it.

What Would Fit

Hobbism as a system, with variants declared. Candidates, offered from general knowledge and not from texts opened for this note:

• Hobbes’s own doctrine (Leviathan, De Cive, De Corpore).
• The egoist-conventionalist line his contemporaries called Hobbism, where Mandeville is commonly placed.
• Modern Hobbesian contractarianism (Gauthier, Morals by Agreement, 1986).

The Ruling That Decides the Result

The question is whether materialism and necessity are core. In the CPA run they carried C1 and C2 Contrary, and so Full Dissolution.

Gauthier keeps value as preference, reason as instrumental, and morality as agreement among self-interested men, but does not rest them on mechanism.

• If he is admitted as a variant, materialism and necessity drop out of the intersection. C1 and C2 would then be judged on what remains, and Full Dissolution is no longer assured.
• If he is ruled a departure, as the Epicureanism and Marxism runs ruled their revisers, the core keeps both and the result will track the CPA.

That ruling is made before the intersection is taken. The engine enforces the intersection; it does not decide what counts as a variant.

How the Output Would Differ from the CPA

• The finding vocabulary is different: Convergent, Partial Convergence, Divergent, Structural Imitation.
• C4, found Partially Aligned in the CPA run, is a candidate for Structural Imitation: the geometric architecture is intact, with names agreed upon at the foundational nodes.
• The question whether C5 is Contrary or Inconsistent does not arise, since the CIA has no Inconsistent finding.

Limits

• The commonwealth and sovereignty doctrine is asserted, not presupposed. It would be recorded and not audited. The corpus has no political philosophy, and Political Verdict Substitution is a named failure mode the engine cannot check.
• Whether the Political Application Constraint reaches Hobbes would have to be ruled before a run.
• By the Declaration Form’s own provenance note, the CIA v3.0 instrument document was not in Project Knowledge when the form was written. A search of Project Knowledge returned the form, the Epicureanism and Marxism runs and the SIA v2.0, and no v3.0 instrument document. A run would rest on the form and the run precedents.
• The form requires fourteen corpus documents to be opened before a run.
