Question One — How significant is the HSA run on Robertson?
Substantial, on four counts, with one real limit.
It is the first instrument that audits instructions rather than doctrine or presuppositions. The Classical Presupposition Audit reaches what a figure must believe in order to argue as he does. The Handbook Standard Audit reaches what a document tells a reader to do, and is indifferent to whether the author holds the doctrines. That is a channel the corpus did not previously have, and it is the channel that matters for practical handbook literature, where most readers meet Stoicism.
It converts Element 4 from a claim into a demonstrated case. Element 4 is the instrument’s statement that Section 2 of the Enchiridion depends on Section 1’s assignment of value — and that removing the value assignment leaves nothing for the faculties to do but adjust quantities. Ten mapped instructions, zero Withdrawal assignments — that is, not one instruction that removes the faculty from the external or corrects the judgement that sent it there. The prediction is not argued in the run; it is read off a live 2026 document. The Step 3 finding is the hinge: the belief that the feared thing is awful is named as a cause of anxiety and left uncorrected, so the only remaining object of work is the reader’s estimate of his own endurance.
It corroborates the CPA without inheriting from it. The quarantine rule and the locality constraint held — the prior Argument Engagement Instrument verdict on the bonus lesson was kept out, and the other five lessons never entered. Two instruments running on different objects under an explicit no-inheritance rule arrived at the same structure: functional efficacy substituted for the thing the classical account puts at the centre. Convergence under blinding is worth more than convergence by construction.
The pilot surfaced its own defect. The finding set cannot distinguish silence about the value assignment from denial of what the value assignment delivers. This document denies it outright — the feelings can never be completely eliminated — and still receives the same Severance finding a merely silent document would. That is the most useful thing a v0.1 run can produce, and it names the next revision: a fifth finding, or a modifier on Severance.
The limit. One lesson, three coverage narrowings, and the whole run turns on the I7 assignment. If “I can’t cope” replaced by “I can endure” were judged to satisfy D1, the run changes character. The judgment is printed and defensible — D1’s belief is the one embedded in the impression about the object, not about the self — but it is the load-bearing call, and it is a call.
Question Two — What does the limit say in plain language?
The whole finding rests on one decision.
Robertson tells the reader to attack the belief “I can’t cope with this” and replace it with “I can get through it.” That is targeting a belief — which is what Epictetus tells you to do in Section 1. So it has the right shape.
The run decided it is still the wrong belief. Epictetus tells you to go after your belief about the thing — that the speech, the memory, the event is bad. Robertson goes after your belief about yourself — whether you can take it. The thing keeps its badness; you just get tougher.
If someone judged that going after either belief counts as following Epictetus, then that instruction would be scored Withdrawal instead of Displacement, the run would no longer show zero Withdrawals, and the Severance finding would be harder to hold.
Two smaller points: it is one lesson out of six, and the audio exercise and the worksheet were never opened — either could contain an instruction the run did not see.
