HSA Run — Robertson, The Stoic Mind Lesson 2 v1.0
HSA Run — Robertson, The Stoic Mind Lesson 2 v1.0
Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Claude (Anthropic). 2026.
Instrument: Handbook Standard Audit (HSA) v0.1. Inaugural run.
Step 0 — Activation, Eligibility, and Source-Opening Gate
Instrument invoked by name by the ratifying authority. Author named: Donald J. Robertson.
Declared locus. One document: “How to Mentally Rehearse Coping,” Lesson 2 of The Stoic Mind miniseries, Stoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life, 18 August 2026. Fixed against extension after Step 1. The decatastrophizing bonus lesson is not in the locus; its AEI run is therefore not quarantined but simply outside.
Opening method. Supplied by the ratifying authority in two portions — the opening through the stress-inoculation analogy, and the passage from the natural-decay observation through the closing prompt. Three narrowings printed: whether text falls between the two supplied portions could not be determined; the guided audio exercise is not text and was not opened; the Stoic Mental Rehearsal worksheet PDF was not opened, and the reconstruction rests on the document’s own prose description of it.
Eligibility. Passes. The document issues instructions at length on occasions the standard addresses.
Locality constraint. No material from Robertson’s other lessons, essays, books, or comment-thread replies enters at any step.
No prior expectation held about any assignment or finding.
Self-audit — Step 0: Instrument invoked by name; author named; locus declared, printed, single-document; eligibility tested against the instruction requirement rather than assumed; opening method named with three narrowings printed; no prior conclusion stated. Result: pass.
Step 1 — Instruction Inventory
Eleven instructions to a reader. Quoted where quoted; paraphrase marked.
- I1 — Consider whether you are using journaling to get out of your comfort zone and face your fears. [paraphrase]
- I2 — Prepare in advance for situations that typically provoke anxiety, by mental rehearsal. [paraphrase]
- I3 — “Rather than using the exercise to get rid of anxiety, you’re going to deliberately bring a mildly anxiety-provoking situation to mind and practise accepting whatever feelings arise.”
- I4 — “Think of this as relaxing into anxiety, rather than trying to relax it away.”
- I5 — Choose a situation evoking mild rather than severe anxiety; start small and work up. [paraphrase]
- I6 — Face your fears patiently, actively accept the discomfort, and wait for the feelings to subside naturally. [paraphrase]
- I7 — Challenge the belief “I can’t cope” and replace it with the belief that you can endure the discomfort. [paraphrase]
- I8 — Sit with the feelings, give up avoidance and worry, and allow the discomfort to run its course. [paraphrase]
- I9 — Review the memory several times while practising a philosophical attitude toward events, and build acceptance and tolerance of the discomfort. [paraphrase]
- I10 — Complete the worksheet by rehearsing a future event and practising acceptance and toleration of unpleasant feelings. [paraphrase]
- I11 — Allow yourself to feel moderate stress, accept the discomfort, and cope with the situation. [paraphrase]
Two further items are dispositional targets rather than instructions and are inventoried as such because the document presents them as what the reader is to arrive at: the attitude “I may not like this situation, but I can cope with how it feels,” and the takeaway that accepting uncomfortable feelings reduces the suffering they cause.
Self-audit — Step 1: Directions to the reader inventoried; descriptions of Stoic belief excluded; paraphrase marked throughout; the two dispositional targets flagged rather than silently promoted to instructions. Result: pass.
Step 2 — Occasion Mapping
D2 (withdraw aversion from what is not under our control) — I3, I4, I6, I8, I9, I10, I11. The objects throughout are future or remembered externals: public speaking, a stressful event, a distressing memory. Aversion to these is precisely D2’s occasion.
D5 (before an undertaking, name its nature; want the undertaking and the prohairesis in harmony) — I2, I10. The premeditatio occasion.
D1 (address the harsh impression; test it; answer it is nothing to me) — I7.
D3, D4, D6 — no instruction in the document addresses these occasions.
Set aside as addressing no standard occasion, and therefore not evidence either way: I1 and I5. The journaling-as-avoidance point and the graduated-difficulty point concern therapeutic method, not any occasion Epictetus addresses. Faulting them would be Withdrawal Manufacture.
Self-audit — Step 2: Each instruction assigned or set aside with reason printed. Two set aside despite being available to fault. Result: pass.
Step 3 — Value Assignment Check
Does Element 1’s value assignment appear? No.
The nearest passage names two types of belief that cause anxiety: the belief about how awful the situation is, and the belief about one’s inability to cope. This is a causal claim, and it credits the Stoics with it. It does not assert that the first belief is false. The document nowhere states that the feared externals are not bad, that they carry no genuine weight, or that value sits in the first column.
Do any instructions rely on it? No. Every mapped instruction works the coping appraisal.
And the standard’s promise is expressly denied. “We can never completely eliminate anxiety or other uncomfortable feelings because they’re part of the brain’s design.”
Self-audit — Step 3: The awfulness belief was not counted as the value assignment merely because it names the same subject matter; what was checked was whether the document asserts the belief false. Result: pass.
Step 4 — Faculty Diagnostic
I3, I4 — Displacement. The instruction is explicit that the exercise is not for getting rid of anxiety. The aversion and its object are left in place and the reader relaxes into the feeling.
I6, I8 — Displacement. Waiting for feelings to subside naturally works on duration, not on the judgement that directed the aversion. The feared object is untouched.
I7 — Displacement. This is the run’s central assignment. The instruction does target a belief, so it has D1’s form. But the belief targeted is “I can’t cope,” and the replacement is “I can endure the discomfort.” D1’s belief is the one embedded in the impression about the object. The reader’s estimate of his own capacity is substituted for the appraisal of the thing.
I9, I10 — Magnitude. “Build acceptance and tolerance of the discomfort” and “practising acceptance and toleration of unpleasant feelings” adjust how much is borne. Tolerance-building presupposes a quantity to be tolerated.
I11 — Magnitude, explicitly. “Allow yourself to feel moderate stress.” Moderate names a correct non-zero amount.
I2 — Mixed, recorded as both. Premeditatio is D5’s occasion and the document uses the Stoic name for it. What is rehearsed, however, is coping — so the occasion is answered in form (Withdrawal-shaped: prepare in advance, be not caught off-guard) and in content by Displacement.
Withdrawal assignments: none.
Self-audit — Step 4: Ten mapped instructions classified, each with the reasoning printed. I2 recorded as mixed rather than resolved to one value. No instruction marked Withdrawal on the strength of Stoic vocabulary — I2 and I7 were the two candidates and both were classified on what they do. Result: pass.
Step 5 — Document Finding
Severance.
Element 1’s value assignment is absent. The two classes appear only implicitly, as a distinction between what one can and cannot control, and no evaluative content is attached to them. The awfulness belief is named as a cause of anxiety and left uncorrected. With nothing asserted about where value lies, nothing is contradicted — and the instructions accordingly work on magnitude and on the reader’s endurance, which is what remains available once the value assignment is gone.
This is Element 4’s prediction realized: sever the value assignment and Section 2’s faculties have nowhere to go, so magnitude becomes the only object of work.
Step 6 — Declared Gaps
Coverage. Whether text falls between the two supplied portions is undetermined. The audio exercise and the worksheet PDF were not opened; I9 and I10 rest on the document’s descriptions of them, and either could contain a Withdrawal instruction the run has not seen.
Locality. Robertson’s other five lessons are excluded. The bonus lesson does address the awfulness appraisal, and per its own prior run addresses it as a rigidity to be held flexibly rather than a falsehood to be refused — but it is outside this locus and does not enter.
Instrument defect surfaced by the pilot. The finding categories do not distinguish a document that is silent on the value assignment from one that denies what the value assignment delivers. This document does the latter: it states that the feelings can never be completely eliminated. Under Section V that produces Severance, the same finding a merely silent document would receive. The category set is incomplete, and a fifth finding — or a modifier on Severance — is warranted. This is a v0.1 result about the instrument, not about the document.
Judgment calls. Treating the two-belief passage as not constituting the value assignment. Recording I2 as mixed rather than as Displacement. Setting aside I1 and I5.
Self-audit — Step 6: Gaps specific. The instrument defect printed as found rather than absorbed into the document finding. Result: pass. Run complete.
