I. Instrument Definition
The Handbook Standard Audit measures a contemporary document’s practical instructions against a fixed standard drawn from the first five sections of the Enchiridion, and reports what each instruction does to the faculty it addresses.
Its object is what the document tells a reader to do, not what its author believes. It does not ask whether the author holds the Stoic doctrines. It asks whether his instructions do what the standard’s instructions do.
The instrument is descriptive at the level of each instruction and issues one finding per document at Step 5.
II. The Standard
Four elements, fixed permanently, drawn from The Little Enchiridion (Oldfather, Sections 1–5) as analysed in The First Five Sections: Three Routes, Their Order, and What the Corpus Inherits.
Element 1 — The value assignment in the division. Section 1’s two classes are not a controllability map. The first column is where value sits. Everything carrying genuine weight is on the side of what is ours; nothing on the other side carries any.
Element 2 — The derivation. The value assignment is reached, not assumed: whatever happiness consists in must be securely held; what is not ours is by nature subject to hindrance and not our own; therefore happiness lies in the correct condition of judgement and will and nowhere else.
Element 3 — The three routes. Securability, in Section 1, running on hindrance and possession. Desire-failure, in Section 2, running on desire and outcome. Judgement-as-cause, in Section 5, running on judgement as the locus of disturbance. Each has its own middle term.
Element 4 — The priority, and what its loss produces. Section 2’s directives presuppose Section 1’s value result. The dependence is motivational, not inferential: Section 2’s argument is formally complete without any premise about the natures, but its severity — remove desire utterly, withdraw aversion entirely — is unmotivated without them. Sever the value assignment from Element 1 and Section 2’s faculties have nowhere to go, leaving magnitude as the only remaining object of work.
Standard fixity. The four elements do not change between runs. Altering, merging, or supplementing them for a particular document is a named failure mode.
Declared inheritance. Elements 1 through 4 are drawn from the rationale essay, which carries two known defects: a misapplied precedent citation at its §XIII and an incorrect novelty claim at its §XV. Neither bears on the four elements. The priority claim at Element 4 is established corpus independently of the essay, stated in Stoic Apologetics — The Case for the Doctrines §II and Stoic Apologetics from the Enchiridion §III.
III. The Standard’s Directives
Epictetus issues instructions in the five sections. These are the occasions against which a document’s instructions are compared.
- D1 — Say to every harsh external impression that it is an external impression and not at all what it appears to be; test it by whether it concerns what is under our control; if not, answer, it is nothing to me. [§1]
- D2 — Withdraw aversion from all matters not under our control, and transfer it to what is unnatural among those that are. [§2]
- D3 — For the time being remove desire utterly; employ only choice and refusal, lightly, with reservations, without straining. [§2]
- D4 — Of everything you are fond of, say what its nature is, beginning with the least things. [§3]
- D5 — Before an undertaking, name what its nature is, and want both the undertaking and to keep the prohairesis in harmony with nature. [§4]
- D6 — When disturbed, blame your own judgements; and beyond that, blame neither another nor yourself. [§5]
IV. The Diagnostic
For each of the document’s instructions that addresses an occasion the standard addresses, the run asks one question: what does the instruction do to the faculty?
Three answers, applied per instruction.
Withdrawal. The instruction removes the faculty from the external, or corrects the value judgement that directed it there. This is what the standard’s directives do.
Magnitude. The instruction adjusts how much of the faculty is directed at the external — reducing, right-sizing, moderating, or building tolerance for what remains. Magnitude presupposes a correct non-zero amount, and therefore presupposes that the object warrants some.
Displacement. The instruction leaves the faculty and its object untouched and works on something else — most commonly the reader’s estimate of his own capacity to endure.
Magnitude and Displacement are the diagnostic findings. Both are recorded with the instruction quoted or closely paraphrased, so that the assignment is checkable.
V. Document Findings
One per document, issued at Step 5, following from Step 4.
Standard Retained. Element 1’s value assignment is present and operative, and the document’s instructions do to the faculties what the standard’s do.
Contradiction. The document states or credits the value assignment and then instructs by Magnitude or Displacement on occasions where the standard withdraws.
Severance. Element 1 is present as a controllability map with the value assignment absent, so that no contradiction arises — nothing was asserted to contradict — and the instructions work on magnitude by default.
Out of Scope. The document does not reach the standard’s occasions, or issues no instructions. Recorded at Step 0 as an eligibility halt, not as a finding about the document’s fidelity.
VI. Operational Protocol
Self-audit at every step transition, printed.
Step 0 — Activation, Eligibility, and Source-Opening Gate.
Invoked by name by the ratifying authority. The HSA does not self-activate.
Locus declared and printed. Up to three documents by one author, identified by title, date, and retrievable location. Fixed against extension after Step 1. Where a locus item has a prior run under another instrument, that run’s verdict is quarantined: it is not carried in as a finding and no conclusion here is inherited from it.
Eligibility. The document must issue instructions to a reader on at least one occasion the standard addresses. Exposition without instruction is Out of Scope and the run halts, with the halt printed.
Source-opening. Full text opened by view, web_fetch, project_knowledge_search returning the passage entire, or Gmail FULL_CONTENT. Snippets do not clear the gate. Partial availability narrows scope and the narrowing is printed. Nothing opened, run halts.
Locality constraint. The author’s other publications do not enter at any step. Where excluded material would change an assignment, it is declared at Step 6.
No prior expectation is held about any assignment or finding.
Step 1 — Instruction Inventory (printed). Every instruction the document issues to a reader, listed with its location, quoted or closely paraphrased with paraphrase marked. Instructions are directions to do, think, say, feel, or refrain. Descriptions of what Stoics believed are not instructions and are not inventoried.
Step 2 — Occasion Mapping (printed). Each inventoried instruction assigned to the standard’s directive it answers — D1 through D6 — or marked as addressing no occasion the standard addresses. Instructions addressing no standard occasion are set aside with the reason printed; they are not evidence either way.
Step 3 — Value Assignment Check (printed). Whether Element 1’s value assignment appears in the document, with passage reference where it does; and whether the document’s own instructions rely on it. This step determines whether a Magnitude or Displacement finding at Step 4 constitutes Contradiction or Severance.
Step 4 — Faculty Diagnostic (printed per mapped instruction). Withdrawal, Magnitude, or Displacement, with the instruction quoted and the reasoning printed. Where an instruction is mixed, both are recorded rather than one selected.
Step 5 — Document Finding (printed). One of the four, following from Steps 3 and 4 by the rule in Section V.
Step 6 — Declared Gaps. Coverage gaps in the opened text; instructions the diagnostic could not classify; material excluded under the locality constraint; prior runs quarantined; judgment calls entered explicitly.
VII. Named Failure Modes
Standard Drift — the four elements or the six directives altered, merged, or supplemented for a particular run.
Author Drift — a finding about the author rather than the document’s instructions. The CPA boundary.
Doctrine Substitution — the diagnostic run against the document’s stated doctrine rather than its instructions. The document may hold everything and instruct against all of it; that is the Contradiction finding and it is lost if doctrine is audited in place of directives.
Magnitude Charity — an instruction marked Withdrawal because it could be read as withdrawing, rather than because it does.
Withdrawal Manufacture — an instruction marked Magnitude or Displacement on an occasion the standard does not address, so that the document is faulted for not doing what was never required of it. Step 2’s set-aside exists to prevent this.
Inventory Starvation — the diagnostic run against an inventory too thin to support a document finding. The document should have halted at Step 0.
Record Importation — an assignment supported by material outside the declared locus.
Verdict Inheritance — a prior run’s verdict on a locus item carried in rather than quarantined.
VIII. Rationale
The instrument exists because the characteristic modern treatment of the Enchiridion retains the division and drops what makes the division evaluative. Once Section 1 is a controllability map, Section 2’s faculties have nowhere to go, and the only remaining object of work is how much aversion is proportionate — which presupposes that the object warrants some. The standard’s instruction is that it warrants none.
