CPA Run — Hyrum on Agreement with Nature v1.0
CPA Run — Hyrum on Agreement with Nature v1.0
Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Claude (Anthropic). 2026.
Step 0 — Protocol Activation
Corpus in view. Opened directly for this run: The Classical Presupposition Audit (CPA) — Version 1.1; Two and One-Half Ethical Systems (Sterling, International Stoic Forum, 18 August 2011); My Desires Are My Judgments. Governing propositions for the six commitments taken as carried in CPA §IV from Nine Excerpts §§3, 4, 6, 7; Core Stoicism Th 10; Stoicism, Foundationalism, and the Structure of Ethical Knowledge.
Subject identified: Hyrum, author of the posted statement “Stoic Logos and Assent: Agreement with Nature.”
Declared locus: that single text — a four-paragraph preamble and eight numbered headings — as supplied. No other source used. No characterization by others, no inference from affiliation.
Locus limitation, declared rather than passed over: the CPA presumes a body of record. One statement is a thin locus. The findings below are provisional to it, and a wider locus could move any Partially Aligned finding in either direction.
Expository exception: not invoked. The trigger is not met — the locus is argument in Hyrum’s own voice, not exposition of a primary source. He marks distance where he intends it (“though adjacent to Stoicism”), which confirms the undistanced material is his own assertion.
No prior conclusion held.
Self-Audit — Step 0:
- Corpus in view — yes; four documents opened directly, governing propositions cited by document and section.
- Sources restricted to the figure’s own record — yes; single declared locus.
- Prior conclusion stated or implied — no.
Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 1.
Step 1 — Presupposition Profile
Stage A — Argumentative Record Summary
P1. Agreement with nature is the terminus of justification. The eight headings are not derived from one another but unified by a phrase. Load-bearing: stated as the organizing thesis of the piece.
P2. Human nature, being rational and social, supplies the content of the excellences; virtue is the rule by which human nature is fulfilled (§2). Load-bearing: §2 and §3 draw their content from it and collapse without it.
P3. Moral motivation is dual — self-approval alongside duty to the greatest whole, in roughly equal measure (preamble; §5). Load-bearing: this is the revision the piece exists to announce.
P4. Moral qualities are intrinsic to human and animal nature and are recognized there, met with approval, benevolence, and impartial sympathy (§5). Load-bearing for §5 and for §1’s account of concern for others.
P5. Virtue is contributory. It produces the smooth flow (§4), contributes to self-approval (§5), contributes to knowledge and practical judgment (§7), does not disturb us (§6), strives for katorthoma (§3). Load-bearing: it is the form of every summary line in the document.
P6. The elimination of passions leaves affections intact, and those affections lead us to act in virtue (preamble); eupatheiai follow correctly ordered judgment (§4). Load-bearing for the apatheia-without-numbness account.
P7. The intellect conforms itself to reality; katalepsis secures cognition where certainty is available, and qualified opinion about the probable is formed without pretending probability is certainty (preamble; §7; §8). Load-bearing for §7 and §8.
P8. The agent orders his own judgments, refuses irrational desire, and brings his desires into harmony with the order of nature (§4, §6, §8). Load-bearing: every heading is stated as something the rational person does.
Stage B — Domain Mapping
D1, cognition and fate (preamble on probability; §7; §8). Presuppositions consistent throughout.
D2, the affective economy (preamble; §4; §6). Internal variation: §4 makes affect consequent on judgment, while the preamble makes affections motivating. Under the charity requirement these are read as compatible — affections consequent on correct judgment and then accompanying action — so the variation is recorded but does not found an Inconsistent finding.
D3, value and motivation (preamble Hutcheson thesis; §1; §2; §5; the eight summary lines). Presuppositions consistent within the domain, and consistently contributory.
One structural fact belongs in Stage B because it determines whether a commitment’s domain is present: the title names assent, and the body never locates it. Assent appears in no heading. Judgment, opinion, and desire carry the whole weight. C2’s domain is nonetheless present through P8, but the originating act is never named.
Self-Audit — Step 1:
- Presuppositions drawn from the locus alone — yes; each is cited to preamble or numbered section.
- Load-bearing test applied — yes; peripheral items (the list of virtues in §2, the enumeration of roles in §3) excluded as illustrative.
- Charity applied where ambiguous — yes, at P4 (read as recognition of qualities present, not as constitution of value by approval) and at D2.
- Domain variation mapped — yes; D2 internal variation recorded and its disposition stated.
- Expository exception — not invoked; nothing tagged.
Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 2.
Step 2 — Commitment Audit
C1 — Substance Dualism: Partially Aligned
Correspondence: P8 requires an interior that orders judgments and is not itself ordered by circumstance; P7 requires an intellect that can conform to reality or fail to, which presupposes something distinct from what it conforms to. Nothing in the locus explains the inner life by class, culture, or institution.
Residual: the self enters §1 as the innermost of nested wholes — self, family, community, nation, humanity, cosmos — rather than as categorically distinct from all of them. Sociality is placed in the person’s nature (§2, §5) rather than in his externals, and role enters the determination of the act (§3). Against Nine Excerpts §4 — “I am my soul/prohairesis/inner self. Everything else, including my body, is an external” — the locus preserves interiority but does not maintain the line at the place the commitment draws it. No direct contradiction; belonging is not constitution.
C2 — Libertarian Free Will: Partially Aligned
Correspondence: every heading presupposes efficacy. The rational person corrects judgments (§4), refuses to act from irrational desire (§6), brings his desires into harmony (§8). This is load-bearing throughout; without it the document is description rather than ethics.
Residual: the originating act is never named. Nine Excerpts §7 — “Choosing whether or not to assent to impressions is the only thing in our control” — places the whole of agency at assent, and the locus, whose title names assent, never locates it. Two consequences. First, §8 accepts the causal order of the world without exempting the agent’s own assents from it, leaving the agent’s standing inside that order unstated. Second, P3 introduces self-approval as a co-equal motive; approval is an affective response, and to the degree motion comes from it rather than from assent, origination is displaced. Efficacy is assumed rather than grounded. Not Contrary — nothing in the locus asserts determination of the agent.
C3 — Ethical Intuitionism: Partially Aligned
Correspondence, and it is real: §3’s kathekon is a directly apprehended contextual demand requiring judgment for its application, not a rule-derived output. This is the structure Sterling identifies in Two and One-Half Ethical Systems as the smooth fit between Ross’s prima facie duties and the Stoic kathêkon. P4 likewise requires a non-inferential recognition of moral qualities.
Residual, at two points. The recognizing faculty is a sensibility — “our greatest moral sensibilities,” approval, impartial sympathy — rather than a rational faculty apprehending a necessary truth. And §2 derives the content of the virtues from what human nature is, which is an inference from a fact about nature rather than direct apprehension. Sterling’s formulation in the same text runs the other way: the right use of impressions is based on truthfulness and is not defined in terms of the virtues, but rather the reverse. §2’s “virtue is the rule of life by which human nature is fulfilled” reverses that order.
C4 — Foundationalism: Partially Aligned
Correspondence: the locus has a stopping point. Everything is referred to agreement with nature, and the referral terminates there. §7’s admission of qualified opinion where certainty is unavailable is not anti-foundationalist; it is the ordinary division between secured cognition and the probable.
Residual, at two points. The terminus is a contingent fact about human nature, reached by observing “human and animal nature,” where Stoicism, Foundationalism, and the Structure of Ethical Knowledge requires that “the fundamental truths of ethics are necessary, self-evident truths that any rational faculty can apprehend directly.” And the eight headings stand coordinate — unified by a phrase, not ordered by dependency. Nothing in the document derives from anything else in it, so there is a terminus without a structure descending from it.
C5 — Correspondence Theory of Truth: Aligned
§7 states the commitment directly: the intellect conforms itself to reality rather than distorting reality through passion, and probability is not to be passed off as certainty. §8 distinguishes what actually occurs from what the agent wishes would occur. The preamble’s account of passion is a correspondence account — virtue strips from perceptions the false appearances that disturbance introduced, which presupposes that an impression is accurate or inaccurate and not merely a psychological event. Value claims are handled the same way: §5 holds that others possess a nature worthy of proper regard, stated as a fact about them, which is the structure of Nine Excerpts §6 — the claim is factually false, and it is a value claim, not a psychological one. No qualifying residual found in the locus.
C6 — Moral Realism: Contrary, and load-bearing
Nine Excerpts §3: “Only virtue is good and only vice is evil. All things not in our control are neither good nor evil.” Core Stoicism Th 10 is to the same effect.
The locus nowhere states that thesis, and P5 forecloses it. Every summary line makes virtue contributory to a further condition: it produces the smooth flow, contributes to self-approval, contributes to knowledge and practical judgment. What virtue contributes to is what the framework treats as valued; virtue is the means. P4 compounds this by locating intrinsic moral qualities in human and animal nature — value resident outside the prohairesis — and P3 installs self-approval as a standing end alongside duty. The corpus position stated in My Desires Are My Judgments is that every desire for an external rests on a false judgment; a framework in which virtue earns self-approval has made approval an external worth desiring.
The contradiction is load-bearing. P3 and P5 cannot be abandoned without removing the §5 heading and the announced revision the document exists to state.
Not Inconsistent. An Inconsistent finding requires a domain in which the presupposition corresponds to the commitment. §3’s use of externals for their proper purposes and §2’s moderation are compatible with the sole-good thesis but do not assert it, and no passage in the locus asserts it. There is no domain of correspondence to set against D3.
Self-Audit — Step 2:
- All eight profile presuppositions audited, including the ones that resist a clean verdict (P6, P8) — yes.
- Non-Operative used to avoid a Contrary finding — no; Non-Operative was not issued, and C2’s domain was found present through P8 rather than declared absent to escape the naming problem.
- Findings distributed for apparent balance — no; four Partially Aligned findings arise because four commitments genuinely show correspondence with a specifiable residual, and each residual is named.
- Findings issued outside the corpus’s domain — no.
- Same findings for a sympathetic figure — yes; the C5 finding is issued as Aligned without qualification despite C6 being Contrary, and the C3 correspondence at §3 is credited fully.
- Inconsistent findings correctly identified rather than forced — yes; the candidate at D2 was examined and resolved under charity, the candidate at C6 was examined and rejected for want of a corresponding domain.
Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 3.
Step 3 — Dissolution Finding
Neither C1 nor C2 is Contrary. No Dissolution.
What the framework preserves: an agent whose inner life is not explained by his conditions, who orders his own judgments, and who is the addressee of every one of the eight headings. An agent adopting this framework is not required to understand himself as constituted by external conditions or as an output of forces preceding him. The C6 finding does not alter this. The framework does not dissolve the prohairesis; it relocates the good.
This is a finding about what the framework requires of those who adopt it, not a finding about Hyrum’s inner life, his sincerity, or his personal condition. The instrument does not reach those and has not addressed them.
Self-Audit — Step 3:
- Does the finding follow mechanically — yes; two Partially Aligned findings on C1 and C2 yield No Dissolution by the rule, without adjustment.
- Stated as a finding about the framework’s implications rather than the figure’s inner life — yes, stated explicitly.
- Stated as philosophical rather than political — yes; no political content is in view.
- Inconsistent findings on C1 or C2 — none; the qualified formulation is not engaged.
Self-Audit Complete. Proceed to Step 4.
Step 4 — Summary Finding
Part A — Commitment Pattern
C1 Substance Dualism — Partially Aligned. C2 Libertarian Free Will — Partially Aligned. C3 Ethical Intuitionism — Partially Aligned. C4 Foundationalism — Partially Aligned. C5 Correspondence Theory of Truth — Aligned. C6 Moral Realism — Contrary.
One Aligned, four Partially Aligned, one Contrary, no Inconsistent, no Non-Operative.
Strongest alignment: C5. §7 and §8 state the correspondence commitment in the corpus’s own terms, and the preamble’s account of what virtue strips from a perception is a correspondence account throughout.
Deepest divergence: C6. Virtue is contributory in every summary line, moral qualities are located in human and animal nature, and self-approval stands as a co-equal motive. The sole-good thesis appears nowhere in the locus.
The four Partially Aligned findings share one residual. In each case the structure of the commitment is present and its terminus has been moved: identity is present but placed at the innermost of nested wholes rather than distinct from them; agency is present but never located at assent; direct apprehension is present but assigned to a sensibility and its content derived from nature; a stopping point is present but resting on a contingent fact about what human beings are. The C6 Contrary is the same displacement carried to the point of contradiction.
Part B — Dissolution Finding
No Dissolution, on the ground that neither C1 nor C2 is Contrary. No Inconsistent finding qualifies it. The framework leaves the self-governing faculty standing.
Part C — Agent-Level Implication
An agent who takes this framework as his governing self-description acquires a genuine account of truth, a genuine account of appropriate action in role, and an interior that is his own. He does not acquire the proposition that only virtue is good.
What he takes on in its place is a standing dependence. If virtue contributes to self-approval, to the smooth flow, and to knowledge, then those are the conditions his framework has him want, and each of them can fail to arrive. Self-approval in particular is not secured by acting correctly; it is a further response that may or may not follow, and an agent who has made it a motive has given a hostage. The corpus identifies this structure — desire directed at what is not wholly within the agent’s power — as the root of pathos, and the identification is independent of whether the desired object is a worthy one. On this framework the agent has an inner life he cannot be dispossessed of and an end he can be dispossessed of, at the same time.
The second implication follows from the four Partially Aligned findings read together. The framework gives him eight coordinate aspects and a phrase that unifies them. It does not give him a chain. When two of the eight pull against each other in a particular case — when what his role makes appropriate and what his sympathy approves diverge — the framework supplies no order of dependency by which to settle it, because none of the eight is prior to any other. Agreement with nature names the unity without supplying it.
Corpus boundary: these are findings about philosophical presuppositions embedded in a single posted statement. They are not findings about Hyrum’s understanding of Stoicism as a whole, his practice, or his standing as a reader of the sources, and the instrument cannot reach those.
Self-Audit — Step 4:
- Does the summary follow from the preceding steps — yes; Part A restates Step 2 findings without alteration, and the shared-residual observation is a synthesis of residuals already named, not new material.
- Agent-level implication converted into a political verdict — no; no political content is in view.
- Addressed to the agent who might adopt the framework rather than to the figure audited — yes, stated in the second person of adoption throughout Part C.
- Corpus boundary declaration issued accurately — yes, and the thin-locus limitation from Step 0 is carried into it.
- Self-contained — yes; a reader can follow the finding and its limits from this document alone.
Self-Audit Complete. CPA run complete.
