Key to the Stoic Philosophy of Epictetus
"Key to the Stoic Philosophy of Epictetus"
"The key to understanding Epictetus is found in understanding the notion expressed in Chapter 1 of The Handbook about 'what is in our power' or 'up to us' (depending upon which translation you use), though this notion cannot be properly understood without tying it in with other aspects of Stoic philosophy.
"For Epictetus the key to the philosophical life is knowing, what is really up to us, and this, he says, is maintaining our prohairesis (moral disposition or moral character - sometimes translated simply as 'will') in the proper condition" (Seddon, pp. 189--91).
