Wishing You Well

Wishing You Well

Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Gemini (Google). 2026.

The friend’s distress stems from a catastrophic value judgment: treating physical capacity and income as vital goods, and their loss as an absolute evil. Classical Stoicism requires dismantling that judgment while affirming that what makes life good—moral virtue, correct judgment, and benevolent intention—remains entirely intact.

1. The Core Distinction: Dispreferred Indifferent vs. True Harm

  • The Body is an External: The physical integrity of the shoulder, the ability to bake, and the financial stream are indifferent things (specifically dispreferred indifferents). They are preferred for practical functioning, but possessing them does not make a person morally good, nor does losing them make a person morally harmed.
  • The Will Remains Uninjured: As Epictetus observed, lameness or physical impairment is an impediment to the limb, not to the faculty of choice, unless choice wills it to be. The friend has suffered a physical malfunction, not a moral catastrophe.

2. Identifying and Correcting the Assent

  • The False Judgment: Believing that a greatest fear has materialized assigns intrinsic negative value to an indifferent circumstance. Fear anticipates an evil; an injury to flesh and bone is not an evil.
  • The Cognitive Correction: Pain and limited mobility are real physical impressions, but the conclusion that one's wellbeing or fundamental security is ruined is a voluntary addition. The individual must withhold assent from the proposition that any true harm has occurred.

3. Locating Virtue in the Present Action

  • Proper Handling of the Material: The circumstance—an incapacitated arm, medical bills, client obligations—is simply the raw material upon which reason operates. Handling an injured body with patience and rationality is just as valid an arena for virtue as running a business at full capacity.
  • Active Duties: Immediate appropriate actions are straightforward:
    1. Submit to medical evaluation and allow damaged tissues to mend without reckless strain.
    2. Fulfill existing commitments only to the extent that it can be done honestly, safely, and without compounding the injury.
    3. Acknowledge the assistance of family, medics, and strangers with genuine gratitude, recognizing benevolence as an expression of natural human fellowship.

4. Direct Counsel to the Friend

The pain and disruption are real, but do not let your mind turn this into a catastrophe. Your shoulder is injured; your character, your mind, and your ability to choose your response remain completely untouched.

Physical mobility and steady work are conditions we prefer to have, but losing them temporarily does not diminish your capacity to live well or act rightly. Treat your recovery as your primary practical duty right now—not as an interruption to your life or a personal failing. Fulfill only the obligations you can safely meet without aggravating the joint, accept the support being offered by friends and family without shame, and let reason govern the rest while the body repairs itself.
