Commentary: The Resolving Protocol as the Formalization of the Proper Use of Impressions
Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Gemini (Google). 2026.
The Resolving protocol formally codifies what Epictetus defines as the sole proper concern of the rational agent: the correct use of impressions (chrēsis tōn phantasiōn; see Discourses 1.1 and 2.8). An impression (phantasia) does not arrive as passive or neutral sensory information; it presents itself with an embedded, unexamined value claim—an implicit demand that an external condition (poverty, cold, political hegemony, marital estrangement, or social decline) be judged good or evil, terrible or salvific.
Without systematic audit, the unreflective mind defaults to automatic assent. The Resolving protocol intervenes at the exact cognitive boundary where passion is generated, operationalizing the mechanics of classical Stoic psychology across three distinct phases:
- Interception at the Threshold of Pre-Emotion (Propatheia to Epochē).
The protocol acknowledges the initial involuntary startle, shiver, or dread (P11; R-2026-10-01-03) as a physiological reaction preceding judgment. By enforcing a deliberate delay, it prevents this bodily reflex from dictating moral consent, enacting Epictetus’s injunction: “Do not let the impression carry you away; say to it: ‘Wait for me a little, impression; let me see what you are and what you represent; let me test you.’” (Discourses 2.18.24). - Decomposition and the Chain of Value (Diakrisis).
The protocol divides the incoming impression into two non-overlapping components:- The factual judgment (D4): The physical or historical state of affairs, stripped of moral narrative (e.g., temperatures below zero, central banking debt issuance, an unresolved conversation).
- The value judgment (D5): The moral predicate claiming that this external state affects happiness.
- The Recovery Audit and Reconstructive Assent (Prohairesis in Act).
True cognitive recovery cannot remain purely negative or skeptical; it requires an active replacement of the corrupted proposition with the true one (Excerpt 7, b and c):- Naming: Bringing the latent false belief into explicit propositional form.
- Withdrawing: Revoking assent from the premise that an external has harmed or elevated the self (P8).
- Formulating the True Proposition: Constructing and assenting to the reality that the external is an indifferent (adiaphoron), and that integrity resides wholly within the rational will (P9).
- Appropriate Action with Reservation: Engaging the world under an explicit reserve clause (hypexairesis), preserving virtue regardless of the external outcome.
In this manner, the protocol acts as an externalized formal instrument against moral deskilling. By preventing an operator or reader from offloading value judgments onto narrative tropes, historical crises, or cultural defaults, it exercises and preserves the uncaused, originary power of libertarian assent (P10; C2). The engine models the derivation path; the rational will executes the assent.
