Step 0 — Protocol Activation
Corpus in view. Core Stoicism and the six-commitments document opened in full; the instrument is not proceeding from memory.
Source-Opening Gate satisfied. Two editions opened in full text rather than from search snippets: The Stoic Handbook, Second Edition (Wiegardt, 2010, wordsmith press), and The Stoic Handbook, College of Stoic Philosophers Preparatory School Edition (Wiegardt, 2016). The 2009 e-book edition was not opened; it is a shorter predecessor and is not in the record. Editions are not variants and are not treated as such.
Target-type note. The CIA audits a doctrinal system with agent: none. The target here is therefore not Wiegardt and not his practice, but the doctrinal system the Handbook states — the Stoicism of the New Stoa and the College of Stoic Philosophers as that text sets it out. The target qualifies for variant-structured treatment because the text declares its own variants in the FAQs, at the question of God.
No prior conclusion stated.
Self-Audit — Step 0. Corpus in view: yes. Target precisely identified as a doctrinal system rather than an agent: yes. Full source text opened: yes. Prior conclusion: none. Complete. Proceed to Step 1.
Step 1 — Ideology Statement and Variant Identification
Core propositions — the intersection, being what any declared version must assert:
- P1. The goal of life is to live in agreement with Nature. This is the single idea on which the system says its foundation rests.
- P2. Nature is god, literally, and the divine is in all things; the 2016 edition adds the qualification “technically, pandeists.” Nature is the teacher, and study of nature is how one learns to live.
- P3. Man is a rational animal made by Nature; reason is Nature’s distinguishing gift and the link to the Logos.
- P4. Only virtue is good and only the lack of virtue is bad; evil is privation of the cardinal virtues; all else is indifferent; there is no evil in Nature, only in human conduct.
- P5. Good and evil are in the will; only will is in our power; no one, not even a god, can take that power away.
- P6. Impression, then judgment, then desire or aversion, then action. Judgment inflames or cools the passions.
- P7. Everything but the will belongs to Nature or to another; fate is responsible for the rest.
- P8. Ethics begins in oikeiōsis; self-love evolves through stages to love of humanity, at which stage virtue is held good for its own sake.
- P9. Doctrinal latitude is itself doctrine: deists, atheists and agnostics are Stoics in good standing; disagreement is preferred to faith; what cannot be demonstrated is left open.
- P10. The system evolves; its orthodoxy moves slowly but moves, and opinions are subject to change.
Declared variants, declared by the target itself at P9:
- V1 — conscious, providential Nature (deist).
- V2 — unconscious Nature (atheist or naturalist).
- V3 — agnostic suspension on the consciousness question and on survival after death.
Asserted claims recorded and not audited, per Failure Mode 5: historical claims about Zeno, Shakespeare, Posidonius and the Renaissance; claims about religions and faith; and social and political positions on equality, gender, race, sexuality and democracy. These are recorded as content of the text and are not objects of this audit, which is also the guard against Failure Mode 3.
Self-Audit — Step 1. Core stated propositionally: yes. Variants declared by the target rather than selected by the instrument: yes. Intersection taken before the audit: yes. Favorable Variant Selection, Failure Mode 1, is unconstructible here: no proposition requiring conscious providence can enter the core while V2 stands. Complete. Proceed to Step 2.
Step 2 — Stage One Core Audit
C1 — Substance Dualism: Divergent. Domain engaged. The system takes explicit positions on the constitution of man and cosmos: Nature is god and is in all things; the universe is one living being of one substance and one soul; man is Nature’s product, with the reasoning faculty as a link to the Logos. This is substance monism. The contradiction is load-bearing: P2 cannot be abandoned without collapsing P1 and the criterion of value. Monism and dualism are not two versions of one thing, so the finding does not convert to Structural Imitation. Recorded: the practical inside-and-outside partition — the mind free though the body is broken, character as the one thing that is one’s own — is retained in full while its ontological ground is denied. The dichotomy is inherited as a habit of speech, not as a consequence.
C2 — Libertarian Free Will: Partial Convergence. The affinity is strong and explicit: the power of choice between virtue and vice is asserted as inviolable, proof against tyrants and gods alike, and ethical advance is said to require an act of choice and will. The residual is that the system never insulates that origination from the cosmology it permits. Under V1, a providential Nature governing all raises exactly the difficulty Sterling flags at Core Stoicism Th 21 — if all is as it should be, acts of vice are not in our control in any important sense. Under V2, an unconscious causal order supplies no originator. The text itself, asked why one man rises and another falls, defers to fate, to genetics, and to open ignorance. No direct contradiction, hence not Divergent. A residual divergence stands, hence not Convergent.
C3 — Ethical Intuitionism: Divergent. The domain is engaged and answered the other way. Moral knowledge is derived rather than apprehended: Nature teaches what we need to know, which is why physics matters; study of nature yields what makes us happy and wise; the universality of moral equality is presented as confirmed by Posidonius’s empirical travels; and the 2016 edition supplies a test for value in terms of contribution to one’s well-being. C3 requires direct, non-inferential apprehension of moral truth — Sterling’s foundational theorems are defensible only by appeal to intuition of their truth. The system’s route to the same content runs through natural fact. Load-bearing: remove the derivation from Nature and P1, P2 and P4 lose their warrant.
C4 — Foundationalism: Structural Imitation. The architecture is present and conspicuous: a secure foundation resting on a single idea, with derived content descending from it — one rule, two maxims, three studies. At the foundational node C4 requires a self-evident truth that terminates regress. The node here holds a directive whose warrant is empirical and naturalistic, declared revisable, and held open to disagreement across the large tent. The descending structure is mnemonic rather than justificatory; the text reorders Epictetus’s three topics for chronological convenience, which is an ordering of a different kind than derivation. Architecture intact; content at the node incompatible.
C5 — Correspondence Theory of Truth: Divergent. The system holds that it is “our judgment that makes something either good or bad,” not the thing in itself, and repeats the Shakespeare line as doctrine in two places. If judgment confers the value, no antecedent value-fact stands for the judgment to correspond to, and the central instrument of the practice — testing a value-impression against reality — has nothing to test against. Load-bearing: this is the system’s whole account of the passions and of the happiness it promises. Recorded: correspondence is presupposed elsewhere, in the demand for evidence and proof and the refusal of faith. That does not rescue the finding, because the contradiction falls precisely in the domain the practice operates on.
C6 — Moral Realism: Structural Imitation. The architecture of an objective value order is reproduced, and reproduced with content the corpus shares: one good only, vice as the only evil, wrongs that admit no excuse, no evil in Nature. The affinity is genuine and is recorded as such. But at the grounding node the moral fact is constituted rather than apprehended — by conformity to Nature, and in the 2016 edition by contribution to well-being — while P9 and P10 leave its content revisable and the judgment-confers-value thesis of C5 removes its independence from belief. C6 requires moral facts that hold whatever anyone believes. Architecture intact; grounding incompatible.
Self-Audit — Step 2. Domain engagement affirmed for all six, so Orthogonal is not used and Orthogonal Evasion, Failure Mode 4, is not in play. Each Divergent finding carries a named contradiction and a load-bearing showing. Each Structural Imitation names the imitated architecture and the substituted content separately. Symmetry Bias, Failure Mode 6: the distribution is three Divergent, two Structural Imitation, one Partial Convergence. C2 was tested against Convergent and against Divergent before Partial Convergence was issued, and the residual is named independently of what it produces downstream at Step 3. C6 was tested against Divergent, and its shared content with Th 10 is reported rather than suppressed. The check cannot establish that the distribution is accurate, only that no finding was placed in order to balance the table. Complete. Proceed to Step 3.
Step 3 — Dissolution Finding
C1 Divergent, C2 Partial Convergence. The rule fires: Partial Dissolution.
Stated as framework implication and not as a verdict on any person: an agent who takes this system as the governing account of his condition retains the vocabulary of the dichotomy without the ontology that makes it true, and retains the assertion of a free will without any account of what originates it. What he has left is a practice whose central claim about himself he cannot ground.
Dissolution Inflation, Failure Mode 2, is not in play: the rule reads one Divergent and one Partial Convergence and returns Partial, not Full.
Self-Audit — Step 3. Dissolution computed from the C1 and C2 findings only: yes. Form is framework implication: yes. No political or practical verdict attached: confirmed. Open item recorded below. Complete. Proceed to Step 4.
Step 4 — Structural Imitation Characterization
Two findings, C4 and C6. The pattern in both is the same and is worth naming: the system inherits the shape of the classical structure — a single secure foundation with descending derivations, an objective order of value with one good — and fills the load-bearing node with naturalistic content the commitment excludes. This is why the text reads as orthodox and audits as divergent. Nothing in the practice it teaches is altered by the substitution; everything in the justification is.
Self-Audit — Step 4. Both findings carry imitated architecture and substituted content as separate showings: yes. Neither was used as a softened Divergent; the C1 and C5 findings were not converted. Complete. Proceed to Step 5.
Step 5 — Stage Two Variant Differential
Input: the presuppositions distinguishing V1, V2 and V3 — whether Nature’s intelligence is conscious, and whether that question is answered or suspended.
- C1 — confirm. V1 supplies a conscious cosmic intelligence, not a second substance; participation in one divine Nature is monism under either answer.
- C2 — confirm. The residual is produced differently by each variant — providence under V1, causal order under V2, suspension under V3 — and survives all three.
- C3 — confirm. No variant supplies non-inferential apprehension.
- C4 — confirm. V3 deepens the revisability at the foundational node without altering the split between architecture and content.
- C5 — confirm. No variant touches the judgment-confers-value thesis.
- C6 — confirm. V1 taken alone would press C6 toward Partial Convergence, since a conscious providential order could carry an objective moral structure. The intersection rule bars the move: V2 stands as a variant in good standing by the target’s own declaration, so the core cannot assert conscious providence. This is Failure Mode 1 closed by construction rather than by judgment.
Self-Audit — Step 5. Output is shift or confirm only; no per-variant verdict was issued. Complete. Proceed to Step 6.
Step 6 — Summary Finding
C1 Substance Dualism Divergent C2 Libertarian Free Will Partial Convergence C3 Ethical Intuitionism Divergent C4 Foundationalism Structural Imitation C5 Correspondence Theory Divergent C6 Moral Realism Structural Imitation Dissolution Partial Stage Two Confirm on all six
The system states the classical ethical content accurately and at points verbatim — only virtue is good, evil is privation, the will alone is ours — and grounds all of it in Nature construed as a god about whose consciousness the system declines to decide. Every commitment that concerns how the agent knows, and what makes his claim true, either diverges or is imitated. The one commitment that concerns what the agent is diverges; the one that concerns what he can do survives, qualified, without support from anything else in the system.
Items Carried
O11 — dissolution rule gap. The declaration computes Full from two Divergent findings, Partial from one Divergent and one Partial Convergence, and None from neither Divergent. The combination of C1 Divergent with C2 Convergent fires no clause. This run did not land there, but the case is constructible and the rule should be closed in the instrument document.
O12 — internal contradiction that is not variant divergence. The Handbook’s Three Controls exercise posits three degrees of control — complete, some, none — against its own second maxim, that only the will is in our power. On Dave Kelly’s framing this is the control-and-influence distinction collapsing, the first of the nine. It is recorded here and not audited, since it is an internal inconsistency in the target and the CIA has no Inconsistent finding. Whether internal contradiction that is not variant divergence requires a Stage One field is left open.
O6 carried. The fourteen-document required set remains unverified against a CIA v3.0 instrument document.
