The Narrative Composition Protocol (NCP) — Version 0.2
Theoretical foundations: Grant C. Sterling (Eastern Illinois University). Analysis and synthesis: Dave Kelly. Prose rendering: Gemini (Google). 2026.
Object and Governance
The Narrative Composition Protocol (NCP) governs the generation of original narrative fiction designed to instantiate the classical realist commitments at the pre-argumentative, depicting layer.
The protocol ensures that philosophical principles are not argued, asserted, or demonstrated didactically, but operate solely as the structural mechanics of the physical, economic, and moral world depicted.
Governing Commitments (C1–C6)
- C1 — Substance Dualism: Non-Operative / Neutral. Mental operations (perceiving, deliberating, judging, assenting, withholding) are depicted with operational precision. Bodily and environmental constraints are treated as physical facts. Formal metaphysical dualism is not theorized.
- C2 — Libertarian Free Will: Operative / Carries. Assent is self-originated, unforced, and strictly accountable. Environmental, hereditary, and social formation are acknowledged in full, but never admitted as a sufficient cause or moral excuse for vicious or dishonest assent. Agency operates decisively at the threshold of attention—looking versus choosing not to look.
- C3 — Ethical Intuitionism: Operative / Carries. Primary moral obligations, promises, and debts are perceived directly by reason as non-inferential first principles. Moral duty is independent of utilitarian aggregates, social approval, and emotional warmth.
- C4 — Foundationalism: Non-Operative / Neutral. Epistemic standards operate stably without staging formal regresses or foundational scaffolding.
- C5 — Correspondence Theory of Truth: Operative / Carries. Truth is the conformity of judgment to an external, mind-independent state of affairs. Physical facts, leases, dates, ledgers, measurements, and levels consistently overturn subjective narratives, flattering self-conceptions, and social consensus.
- C6 — Moral Realism: Operative / Carries (Strongest Driver). Moral facts exist objectively. Moral debts and duties survive the subtraction of consequences, personal inclination, social sanction, and worldly reward. Rectitude is strictly severed from karmic payoff.
Formal Architecture
- Structural Scope: Three distinct volumes; 12 to 19 chapters total; 18,000 to 28,000 words.
- Progression Mechanics:
- Volume I — The Institutional Ground and the Flawed Assent: Establishes the physical and economic constraints (leases, parish chests, drainage, contracts). Introduces a plausible initial transaction. Depicts an agent originating an assent based on motivated blindness, unexamined authority, or the conversion of misfortune into grievance.
- Volume II — The Friction of Fact: The protagonist audits motives and separates operative reasons from convenient pretexts. The subtraction test is applied. Environmental excuses are rejected against empirical records. Epistemic friction is encountered.
- Volume III — The Anti-Karmic Settlement: Resolution is achieved through unadorned physical and documentary facts (not romantic contrivances or rhetorical conversion). Irrecoverable costs (lost time, unpunished injustice, unrequited sacrifice) are accepted without bitterness. The internal ledger is balanced.
Operational Guardrails (Version 0.2 Amendments)
- NCP-G1: Anti-Strawman Rule (Plausible Foils) Tested voices and flawed characters must not be rendered as transparent fools or melodramatic villains. Their initial calculations must be reasonable within their context, or their errors must arise from genuine bad luck. The moral failure must reside strictly in the post-hoc evasion—converting misfortune, disappointment, or cost into a permanent narrative of grievance and self-justification.
- NCP-G2: Protagonist Friction (The Fallibility Rule) The central agent must not possess frictionless omniscience or instant moral perfection. The protagonist's exactness, economic literalism, or suspicion must produce at least one non-trivial error in judgment, an instance of unwarranted severity, or a practical miscalculation that requires quiet, unadvertised restitution.
- NCP-G3: Motivated Enthusiasm (The Nuanced Counter-Agent) Speculative promoters or opposing agents must be driven by intelligible ambition, commercial enthusiasm, or sincere optimism rather than theatrical criminality. The dramatic conflict must demonstrate that sincere enthusiasm detached from physical and documentary reality is just as destructive as fraud.
- NCP-G4: Silent Terminal Standard (The Anti-Preaching Rule) The conclusion must strictly refuse thesis statements, explicit summaries of the governing metaphor, or didactic lectures. The terminal weight must rest entirely upon unadorned physical facts, documentary survivals, and silent, balanced accounts.
Narrative Ledger Standard
Every completed work composed under the protocol must be capable of passing a full Narrative Presupposition Audit (NPA), yielding an uncompromised profile of C2, C3, C5, and C6 as Carries, with C1 and C4 documented as Non-Operative, while maintaining zero routed assertions at the Step 1 Layer Test.
